Instructions:
- Prepare the Toor Dal:
- Rinse the toor dal thoroughly under running water.
- In a pressure cooker, combine the rinsed dal, water, turmeric powder, and salt.
- Cook for about 3-4 whistles or until the dal is soft and cooked through.
- Tempering (Tadka):
- In a separate pan, heat ghee or oil over medium heat.
- Add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, dried red chilies, and asafoetida. Allow them to splutter.
- Add chopped onions (if using) and sauté until golden brown.
- Stir in the minced garlic and grated ginger. Sauté for a minute.
- Add chopped tomatoes and cook until they become soft and oil starts to separate.
- Seasoning the Dal:
- Once the dal is cooked, mash it with the back of a spoon or a ladle to achieve a smoother consistency.
- Add the prepared tadka (tempering) to the dal and mix well.
- Adjust the consistency by adding more water if needed.
- Stir in red chili powder, coriander powder, and garam masala (if using). Mix well.
- Garnish and Serve:
- Garnish with fresh coriander leaves.
- Serve hot with rice or Indian bread (roti, naan).
